Teeth whitening is a relatively simple cosmetic procedure that can deliver amazing results in a short period of time. There are many different over the counter products available, but only the highest quality ones are available through your dentist. These kits contain higher concentrations of hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, the main cleansing agents responsible for producing the whitening effect. Due to this, it typically only takes a couple of applications to achieve noticeable results, in contrast to store bought products that can take weeks and even months in some cases for multiple shade whitening to occur.
Are Take Home Teeth Whitening Kits Right for Me?
Take home teeth whitening kits are recommended for patients suffering from mild to severe staining and discoloration. This can be the cause of poor oral hygiene, smoking and hereditary conditions in many cases. Given that prolonged contact with peroxide can cause gum tissue irritation (one of the main problems associated with brush-applied whitening kits), the types prescribed by your dentist come in a custom tray that is designed to comfortably fit the contours of your jaw.
This enhances patient comfort and prevents the substance from coming into contact with the gingival area. If you are currently using a teeth whitening product and notice a change in the color of your gums, it may be a good idea to contact your dentist. Though they will return to their normal state within a day or so of the application, the burning sensation can be understandably aggravating.
How Does the Procedure Work?
The first thing your dentist will do is take an impression of both your upper and lower jaw. They will send the impression to a lab where the tray will be made; the current shade of your teeth will also be recorded for comparison purposes later on. Your dentist will want to see how well the whitening solution is working and make any needed adjustments as the treatment plan progresses. Once the tray has been received from the lab (this takes approximately one to two weeks), an appointment will be scheduled where you will learn how to insert the whitening solution and any other specific instructions the dentist may have.
It takes on average one hour per day for two weeks for the results of take home teeth whitening kits to show. Once the process is complete, your dentist will evaluate the current shade and advise whether continued treatment is needed. Touch up applications are common for most patients for maintenance purposes.
